Your Guide to the Reality of Animal Circus

"The academic panel concluded that there appears to be little evidence to demonstrate that the welfare of animals kept in travelling circuses is any better or worse than that of animals kept in other captive environments" - Executive Summary of the DEFRA Circus Working Group 2007

ANIMAL DEFENDERS INTERNATIONAL AT IT AGAIN: Animal Defenders International & Anne the elephant

ANIMAL DEFENDERS INTERNATIONAL AT IT AGAIN: Animal Defenders International & Anne the elephant

The discredited animal rights group Animal Defenders International (ADI) are at it again trying to get their hands on Anne the elephant.

This despite the fact Anne the elephant has arthritis and can't be moved to be with other elephants because of this underlying health condition. Anne now lives in a purpose-built facility at Longleat Safari Park which was constructed from public money after an appeal from the Daily Mail newspaper. She receives expert care from genuine specialists in elephant husbandry.

Nevertheless, ADI is absolutely desperate to get their hands on Anne the elephant to put her in an animal rights run sanctuary so they have control over her and use her for their propaganda purposes.

They even went as far as attacking Longleat Safari Park and the expertise of people who are responsible for her welfare.

Let's not forget about the hidden cameras placed on Bobby Roberts farm; the groom who abused animals and then mysteriously disappeared; and the court case where Mr Roberts was given a conditional discharge with a judge severely chastising the behaviour of Animal Defenders International.

These are the official remarks Judge Chinery wrote about the leaders of ADI Robert Cogswell and Jan Creamer:

"...I found Robert Cogswell to be a witness whose evidence I must treat with caution. He works for ADI an organisation which has its own agenda and was, perhaps not unnaturally, somewhat circumspect about the amount of detail he gave in his evidence. He was questioned at length about his previous conviction and his previous activities with organisations engaging in like activities. He was not shaken under cross-examination but I was left with the impression that he had told me what he wanted me to hear. In particular, his account of how the camera came to be placed in the location was too coincidental for me to accept..."

"...Jan Creamer is the Chief Executive of ADI. She was very clear about the objectives of her organisation. She authorised Robert Cogswell to undertake the covert surveillance of the barn. It was put to her at length that the keeper Nitu was an employee planted by ADI, something which she denied equally vehemently. She was also questioned at length about the way in which and the time-frame within which the video footage had been released to the media. She maintains that this is the most effective way of promoting their cause and of securing convictions. She was not shaken under cross-examination. Her evidence re-inforced the concerns which I have about the way in which this case was put together before the Crown Prosecution Service became involved and about the way in which ADI in general operates..."

"...The conclusion to which I am drawn therefore is that Anne’s welfare was only a part of the objective by ADI; they have a wider agenda much of which has been alluded to by defence counsel..."

Perhaps also, more compelling evidence that Anne did not suffer from abuse under the direct control of Bobby Roberts was the testimony from Longleat Safari Park vet Jonathan Cracknell. He stated in a news article at the time of Anne's moved to Longleat:

"...Anne is, according to Cracknell, in pretty good condition. Her back legs, which are racked with arthritis, already seem better, and her dry, cracked skin is improving – she uses the pile of sand as a sort of facial scrub. She is not overweight and does not have the sort of scars and scratches you would expect if she had been routinely abused for a long time. At 57 or thereabouts, she is already older than most elephants in captivity, which suggests she has had a decent life..."

Finally, we have the recent investigation and exposé of how Bobby Roberts was set up by Animal Defenders International utilising the services of people with allegedly criminal backgrounds.
